Gotta say I've never understood it.
It is a well known fact that children between the ages of two and eight are unusually terrified of bearded men. I learned that in my psychology class, so it's not like it isn't known.
Yet, every year we force small children to experience that terror over and over again.

Yeah...well, it was kinda the other way around with our local Santa. My son liked to bounce on Santa's lap and always managed to wrack him every year. Oh, the terror in that poor man's eyes...
